Patience Harris was the daughter of Maria Ann Harris (nee Bome), the wife of Augustus Frederick Glossop Harris (1825–1873), who established a premier manufacturer of theatrical dresses under the name "Madame Auguste." Under this name, Maria, and later her daughter, supplied costumes for Gilbert & Sullivan's Patience, Iolanthe, Princess Ida, The Mikado, Ruddigore, Utopia, Ltd, and The Grand Duke; and several other D'Oyly Carte productions including The Chieftain, The Emerald Isle, and The Rose of Persia.
